Questions and Answers about spam on the
Waymark network:
Question:
I get tons of spam to my mail box hosted at Waymark. Is there anything Waymark can do to fix this?
Answer:
Yes, and we try to allow the best service for all of our customers. We filter all incoming and out going e-mail for spam and viruses. You may have noticed lots of e-mail with *****POSSIBLE SPAM***** in the subject. Waymark scans all e-mails for spam using spamassassin. Filtering the e-mail allows Waymark to give the mail user a way to filter spam on their own computer. Most mail programs can filter based on items in the subject line of the e-mail. All mail that we scan that end up being classified as spam contains *****POSSIBLE SPAM***** in the subject. Simply make a filter based on the subject containing that line and forward all of those mails to the trash bin.
Question:
I still get some spam, though. What can I do about that?
Answer:
It is nearly impossible for Waymark to know what you think spam is, and then properly tag all spam based on your specific preference. We try to catch as much as we can, but there will always be some that are missed. We currently block about 70% of all incoming e-mail, and sometimes that just isn't enough.
The best way to deal with spam that still makes it to your computer is to just delete it. Do not open the e-mail, do not reply, and do not press the unsubscribe button. If you would like more information on combatting spam, please read over some of the helpful hints on this website. The ultimate best way to help is to NEVER BUY products solicited in an e-mail.
Question:
What about viruses?
Answer:
Viruses are quarantined, and therefore not delivered. We use the freely-available ClamAV as our virus scanner. This program allows us to reliably scan each mail that passes through our servers for viruses and then, if they are classified as a virus, they will NOT be delivered. This system protects our users from propogating e-mail viruses, and protects their computer from all of the problems associated with viruses.
Question:
I found a piece of mail that I don't think is spam, but it has the POSSIBLE SPAM subject. Why was that classified as spam?
Answer:
Spam filtering is not always 100% accurate. If it was, no one would ever get spam. Sometimes spam will get through the spam filter, and sometimes legitimate e-mail will be classified as spam. That is the main reason Waymark gives you, the customer, the choice whether or not to delete anything that we classifiy as spam. That way, even if we mess up and classify something that you want to get as spam, you will still get it and won't have the problem with Waymark deleting your mail.
Question:
I have mail hosted somewhere else, does any of this apply to me?
Answer:
Probably not. Waymark can host your mail for you, and you would
be able to take advantage of all of the above features, in addition
to web-based e-mail. If this sounds like something you would
be interested in, please send an e-mail to .
Also, if you have your mail hosted somewhere else, and check
that mail box, you could still get viruses and spam from those
mail accounts.
